What does treatment of test tube baby involve?

Steps in process of test tube baby starts on day 2 with an injection daily for the growth of the egg. Ultrasound monitoring is done every 2-3 days to see the size of the follicle which tells us about how mature the egg is. Once follicles reach a particular size hCG injection is given for final maturity of the egg and this is followed by egg pickup under general anesthesia. The eggs are then fertilized with the sperm The resulting embryo (termed commonly as test tube baby) is after 3 to 5 day planted in the uterus. The pregnancy test is done after 14 days.

What are the advances in test tube baby technology?

The technology of test tube baby has advanced by leaps and bounds and today one can give children to men with no sperms, women with no eggs or uterus through donor eggs and surrogacy. Microtese ICSI can be done for men with no sperms in the semen where sperms are retrieved through testis. The embryo can be tested for genetic diseases through pre implantation genetic disease(PGD). In the case of recurrent failure of IVF preimplantation genetic screening (PGS) can be done where all embryos are biopsied and tested for a genetic abnormality. In these cases, only normal embryos are transferred.

What is the success rate of test tube baby treatment?

Test tube baby success rates are 50 to 60%. However success rates vary according to the cause of infertility. Unexplained infertility and mild male factor have better success rates than severe male defects (severe oligosthenospermia, azoospermia) or women with less eggs ( low AMH and ovarian reserve)
